Nuclear Waste May Pass Through Evansville

Several watchdog groups are concerned about a train purportedly carrying a used nuclear core that they believe will travel through the Evansville area. Nukewatch, a Wisconsin-based organization dedicated to abolishing nuclear weapons and power, reported that a train carrying the low- level radioactive waste, consisting of the core of a defunct reactor, departed at about noon Thursday from the Dairyland Power Cooperative site in Genoa, Wis., for a disposal facility in South Carolina.

Kentucky Gets New Area Code

For the second time in less than a decade, the Henderson area next year must change area codes, the Kentucky Public Service Commission announced Thursday morning. The PSC issued an order stating that the western portion of area code 270 - which includes the areas of Henderson, Madisonville, Hopkinsville, Paducah and Murray - will be assigned a new area code in 2008.

Lifeflight Celebrates 25 Years

It was the first of its kind in the region. Its crew worked 24- hour shifts. Weather didn't much matter; if they could see the ground, they would go. They'd rush to scenes, whether it meant landing on a highway in Illinois or on the roof of a hospital in Kentucky. The LifeFlight helicopter ambulance today celebrates 25 years in Southwestern Indiana. In that time, LifeFlight has transported more than 8,500 patients.

Greenway May Be the Place to Downsize

It was surely a case of trespass. But I couldn't wait any longer to try out the new segment of the Pigeon Creek Greenway from Casino Aztar to West Franklin Street. Man Denies Sex Acts with Teenager He Hopes One Day to Be Police Applicant

An Evansville man accused of sexual misconduct with a minor told a detective he was afraid of getting in trouble because he "didn't want to jeopardize his future as a police applicant" with the Evansville Police Department. Joseph Keith Egan, 21, of 1751 Hawthorne Ave., faces a preliminary charge of Class C felony sexual misconduct with a minor.

'Making History' Project Finished, Airs

Culver Elementary School fourth-graders Jarvice Sears, Sierra Fox- Suggs, ShaAria Rankin and Daivanda Traynham watched intently as the video they had a part in creating was shown for the Downtown Kiwanis Club at Casino Aztar on Thursday. It was the first time the students had seen their "I'm Making History" oral histories video, which featured black residents talking about their experiences in a segregated Evansville in the 1950s.

Donations Are Pouring in to Help Rescued Horses Veterinary Care Is Expensive Task for Nonprofit Group

Donations have poured in from across the country since the Indiana Horse Rescue impounded 15 horses from the property of Richard M. Stallings of Owensville, Ind., on Saturday after they were found severely malnourished and dehydrated. Since the rescue is a nonprofit organization that relies only on donations, treating the horses, who needed immediate veterinary care because of dehydration, starvation and other medical conditions, is a difficult and expensive task.

Book Rental Fees Board to Vote On Rate Increase

Textbook rental fees for the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corp. are likely to creep up again. The School Board will vote Monday night on a rate scale for the 2007-08 academic year that pushes rates higher for all grade levels.

Man Who Fired Gun Out Window Free On Bond

An Evansville man accused of randomly firing a gun out the window of a white blazer this week is free on bond. Emmerson L. Cabell, 23, of 1012 W. Delaware St., faces preliminary charges of criminal recklessness, a Class D felony and two Class A misdemeanor charges for having a handgun without a license and possession of marijuana.

An Evansville woman is accused of firing a shotgun twice at her ex-husband as he drove away after an argument. Lucretia M. Joyce, 43, of 426 S. Linwood Ave., faces a preliminary charge of Class C felony criminal recklessness with a shotgun.

Ohio River Ready for a Clean Sweep

A discarded car tire floats lazily down the Ohio River, while garbage can lids, used cups and other trash lines the shore near Downtown. Volunteers are being requested to help clean up such garbage for River Sweep 2007, an annual event where thousands of people across six states work to clean more than 3,000 miles of shoreline along the Ohio River and other waterways.

Guard Pilot Cleared to Leave Hospital

VINCENNES, Ind. - An Air National Guard pilot who escaped serious injury when he parachuted from an F-15 just moments before the fighter jet crashed in Southwest Indiana was released Thursday from medical observation, military officials said. "He's released from all medical observation and he's en route back to Missouri," said Missouri Air National Guard Capt. Tamara Spicer.

The public is invited for the ribbon cutting and open house for a new contract postal unit in Newburgh's TCBY, 4222 Bell Road Suite 7. The postal retail location will operate 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and noon to 9 p.m. on Sundays.
