Spring is here, bringing with it colorful flowers, chirping birds and wheezing children. It is nature's little joke on pediatricians - just as the last vestiges of winter illness fade away and you think you may have a chance to rest, the parade of allergic sniffles begins. For some children, this is the time their asthma flares up as well.

Asthma is a chronic disease of the lungs that causes inflammation and swelling of the airways, as well as excess mucus production. The airway muscles tighten and constrict, creating the sensation of trying to breathe through a small straw. This in turn produces the symptoms of cough, wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath.
