WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama's proposal to attack the ballooning budget deficit by freezing domestic spending at current levels over the next five years has drawn a cold shoulder from Republicans who insist deeper cuts are necessary to regain fiscal stability.

"He speaks like one who recognizes that spending is out of control, and yet his response is to propose that we lock in spending levels we all know are completely unsustainable," said Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, of Kentucky, in the wake of Tuesday's State of the Union address.
