CHANDLER, Ind. - The smell was half cheeseburger, half mud clod. Country music blared. Cars with names like "Sudden Psychosis" and "Boogie Tunes" waited to take hot laps. Crew members hauled gasoline containers and changed tires.

It was Friday night, race night, at the Chandler Motor Speedway. There were 200 or so people in the pits and about 400 spectators, many of whom brought lawn chairs.
