Although Vanderburgh County Treasurer Rick Davis holds an elected office and has roots within the local Democratic Party, he is pretty much a newcomer to high-profile city politics. We suspect that a lot of people who will vote would not have recognized Davis' name a year ago.

But he has made the most of opportunity, coming on like gangbusters, and daring to challenge a fellow Democrat, Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel, even if the two-term incumbent decided to seek a third term. Weinzapfel didn't, and now Davis is running full- throttle for the Democratic mayoral nomination against the county party organization's unofficial choice to succeed Weinzapfel, former County Commissioner Troy Tornatta.
