The description offered by a youth baseball official of the blight to Vann-Pollack Park on the city's Southeast Side is sickening. But it is a complete credit to Chester Downs, the South Youth Baseball manager, that he stepped forward.

The city has been criticized for years for its failure to keep neighborhood parks from falling into disrepair. In fact, the city's ability, or lack of ability, to maintain its parks was an argument in the successful campaign against creating a new park adjacent to Wesselman Park.
