Many longtime Evansville residents know J. Henry Ballman as a past director of the Freedom Festival, and a singer who with his late wife, Mildred, entertained scores of civic groups and senior citizens' organizations with vocal stylings and musings from his Kernal Kornball alter ego.

But Ballman's pensive side shows in diaries he's kept for much of his 97 years that chronicle a hardscrabble upbringing on a small Kentucky farm and a formal education that stopped at the eighth grade.
