Eastern Kingbirds Claim Riverfront Territory

Summary


For me, even a foray to Wal-Mart is a birding trip. So, when we stroll the Riverfront, relaxing at the end of the day, I've come to expect certain birds singing, feeding, or loafing along the walkway. Sometimes, however, I enjoy a surprise.

A little flock of mallards always feeds along the bank, tipping in the shallows. At least one and sometimes two or three great blue herons skim the water, rowing easily from shore to shore. Doves, red- winged blackbirds, pigeons and starlings always sally through. An occasional grackle preens among treetops. Three song sparrows claim scattered territories along the way. Robins pluck bugs from the grass. Barn swallows swoop low, scooping bugs.
