Summary


Count me among those who were surprised, yet heartened, by the news that President Barack Obama won this year's Nobel Peace Prize, an award given in this instance not so much for what he has done so far as president, but for what his election represents to the world.

My surprise then turned to resignation; a sense that as much as we would like to say we've achieved a "post-racial" society, it will be a good while before we actually get there.
