When I was growing up, my cousin Danny was one of my favorite people. He was older than I, but was always patient and kind and never treated me like an annoying little kid. He grew up to be a firefighter, like his two older brothers, and eventually became chief of the fire department.

I hadn't seen him for a while, so when we finally had a chance to visit recently, I was glad to see that the years of hard work under demanding conditions had not changed his compassionate spirit. One of the most heartbreaking parts of his job, he told me, was dealing with the damage caused by children playing with fire.
