Fish Kill Blamed On Spilled Soda Ash

Summary


Soda ash that spilled from cars of a CSX train that derailed Tuesday at Slaughters, Ky., has gotten into the east fork of Deer Creek and killed an unknown number of fish, Kentucky officials said.

Also known as sodium carbonate, soda ash is not hazardous or toxic to humans, but when mixed with water in the stream, it increased the basicity level of the creek, said Rodney Polly, a response coordinator with the stateOs environmental response branch.
