Many believe that as China grows less dependent on Western investment and technology, the authoritarian government will grow more demanding and assertive. Typical of that, it is said, is a plan unveiled last year that would force foreign firms as a price of doing business to turn over their technology and other intellectual property to their Chinese partners, often government-owned.
