Summary


William Nix of Evansville read my recent story about the late Rudy Phillips, the one-time hobo from Shawneetown, Ill. It reminded the 85-year-old Nix of when he rode the rails.

"It was 1939 at the end of the Great Depression. My stepbrother, Harold Perton, and I were 16 years old and lived on a produce farm near the small town of Woodburn, Ore. In mid-June, with the fruit harvest over, we were hungry for adventure. We chose to hop the long freight train to Britt, Iowa, where we had lived before.
