"He needs to assume more of a leadership role," said Lowery, who hopes to return SIU to prominence this winter after three consecutive losing seasons. "He's had two years to understand what he needs to do. You have to relish being a leader. Now he understands what we need. He's more mature, he's stronger. He's a small point guard, but doing the physical things, he's very impressive." As SIU's point guard, Lowery played in two National Invitation Tournaments and two NCAA Tournaments. As a coach, he guided the Salukis to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2007 - the sixth consecutive year they advanced to the NCAAs. He was rewarded handsomely, signing a seven-year contract worth $750,000 per season. SIU advanced to the National Invitation Tournament in 2008, before falling on hard times. After last season, SIU athletic director Mario Moccia indicated that Lowery would retain his job.See the full content of this document
