INDIANAPOLIS - The emotional task of fighting freedom for the man who gunned down a sheriff's deputy during a bank robbery nearly 39 years ago ended satisfactorily for the lawman's family Thursday when the Indiana Parole Board once again rejected the convict's petition.

By a 4-0 vote, the board decided without discussion to deny parole to Billy Ray Adams, 64, who is serving a life sentence for the Feb. 24, 1972, slaying of Marion County Deputy Tom Settles, a crime some describe as an execution.
