CAVE IN ROCK, Ill. -- It was 3 a.m. when I got out of bed and stood barefooted on the trembling floor, the muted rumbling of the Pat Chotin's three mighty diesels dominating the night.

It was my intention to catch the drama of the occasion, to climb up to the pilot house and watch the little river towns slip past in the night, their all-night lights standing in deepest silhouette.
