Mange Cycle Returns to Attack Tri-State Squirrels

Summary

I have received calls and e-mails from concerned Tri-State residents who are seeing ObaldO squirrels, missing some to most of their fur. A quick check with my veterinarian confirmed what I suspected N the squirrels are affected with mange.

Mange is caused by several species of microscopic mites that burrow into the animalOs skin. Although the mites are too small to be seen, the skin changes brought on by infestation can be dramatic. Mange infestations result in hair loss, first on the chest and shoulders, then progressing over the entire body. In extreme cases nearly the entire body is bare and the exposed skin becomes thickened and dark. Mange-infested squirrels are very likely to die during cold nights, because they no longer have fur to keep them warm.
