In a previous column, I confessed to being a carrier of the Joe Btfsplk syndrome. Joe, you'll recall, was the character in the old Lil' Abner comic strip who brought unintended misfortune and mayhem wherever he went.

I revealed then that it was because of me that people had long waits on checkout lines, frustrating delays at traffic lights and troubles with companies such as Toyota. What I omitted, however, is my responsibility for the disappearance of certain items from store shelves.
