EDITOR'S NOTE: Pam Howard is a 1972 graduate of Reitz High School and a 1976 graduate of the University of Southern Indiana. She's taught seventh-grade mathematics at Mount Vernon Junior High School for 31 years. This essay is a special remembrance of her mother, a well-known West Sider, and the charitable efforts she's inspired.

In the last 14 years, Mount Vernon Junior High School has collected more than $41,000 for St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis through the St. Jude's Math-a-thon.
