INDIANAPOLIS - As soon as U.S. Rep. Mike Pence officially launched his campaign for Indiana governor on Saturday, his opponents cast him as a man driven by social issues.

To some extent, the characterization is true. Pence said he intends to make those issues - specifically abortion, gay marriage and religion - more central to his campaign than Gov. Mitch Daniels, the Republican he hopes to succeed, has in recent years.
