Summary


Five years after planning began, Vanderburgh County is zeroing in on a plan to use the mostly vacant steel-and-block interior of its former jail in the Civic Center.

During a Sept. 24 committee meeting, the County Council will consider spending $920,000 on a multipronged renovation and demolition plan for the 31,000-square-foot facility. Council members are set to vote on the plan Oct. 1.

The money would come from a "jail set-aside fund" created by the council when the current $35 million jail off Harlan Avenue was planned in 2001. The fund, which was intended for unexpected expenses, now holds $2,914,342.
