My 3-year-old grandson is going through a politeness phase. He loves to say "Yes, pwease," especially if asked about something he likes to do, such as watch TV. He also says "No, fanks," if asked, for example, if he'd care to finish his vegetables.

How long this will last is anyone's guess. But politeness is an important social habit. Jerry Seinfeld's neighbor, Kramer, once defined it as the glue that holds society together, after Jerry refused to thank a mutual friend who'd lent them his hockey tickets.
