Susan Melfi has been something of an oddity in her politically active Democratic family in Connecticut for as long as she can remember.

Despite having a sister who was once a paid campaign staffer for U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman, a mother on the Monroe, Conn., Democratic Town Committee and a brother-in-law who was Connecticut's assistant state controller, Melfi has steadfastly resisted her family's efforts to draw her into Democratic politics.
