When the lights went out for 50 million people across the Midwest, Northeast and parts of Canada five years ago today, Mark Bailey was, as he says, "at the epicenter."

Bailey, who is now vice president and chief operating officer for Big Rivers Electric Corp. at Henderson, Ky., was working in August 2003 for American Electric Power's transmission organization at Columbus, Ohio.
