FAIRFIELD, Ill. - After a weekend of bargaining, members of the United Auto Workers Local 543 have approved a new three-year contract with Airtex Products, the largest employer in Wayne County. The agreement was reached shortly after 6:15 p.m. Sunday by a vote of 224-122.
The original contract expired at midnight Tuesday, but an agreement was reached to extend the contract through midnight Friday. On Saturday, members rejected the first contract offer by a vote of 190-156, but they agreed to continue bargaining, extending the original contract through midnight Sunday.
